37 Charged After Allegedly Preparing For Street Race

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Fairfax County police charged 34 adults and three juveniles with trespassing in what they said appeared to be the start of a street race.

Police were called to a Centreville Presbyterian Church in the 15400 block of Lee Highway in the Bull Run area at 12:45 a.m. Saturday. Officers found several vehicles and people ranging in age from 16 to 38 in the church parking lot, police said.

The investigation determined that the people were preparing to race, police said.

Police said they already suspected a nearby stretch of Lee Highway was used for street racing.

"The officers were able to gather all those people together in the parking lot and through the course of their investigation determined that while it appeared that they were beginning to start preparations for street racing, the street racing had not actually occurred at that point, so everyone was charged with trespassing on the private property," said Fairfax County police spokeswoman Shelley Broderick.

Police said they do not believe the case is a sign of increased street racing in the county.

Police said those caught street racing in Fairfax County face up to a year in prison, the loss of their vehicle, a suspended drivers' license for up to two years and a fine of $2,500.

In February, eight people were killed in Accokeek, Md., when a man drove his car into a crowd that gathered to watch an illegal street race.
