ok hear goes I am switching to road runner business class with 1 gig upload and 2.0 gig down load , but I will need a router to connect all three of my computers. Any suggestion they suggested Linksys routers. Where my Home roadrunner Premium was five upload and eight down load with a piece of crap router modem combo net gear.
So what everyone else is using?

im a fan of the lynksys routers. but using my verizon supplied westell modem/router.

but as your up and down speeds, holy shit! if you have issues with roadrunner not giving you a consistent ping, upgrading it wont fix it. never understood that, yes you download/upload shit instantly, but speed like that wont help your gaming issues and connectivity to game servers. I had cable for a quite a while, had insane d-load and upload speeds, but it couldnt hold a constant ping to save its life. I sacrificed speed over ping stability and now have shitty ass verizon dsl. I dload at 160k and up at 50k, but my ping is smooth as a virgin prom queens thigh. constant ping is what im looking for as a gamer not up and down speeds. Hope it works out well for you.

im a fan of the lynksys routers.

DO you have suggestion on which one?
I will have to set up my own net work for my three computers.
.why they suggested on a router, either wireless or wired.
also think with Linksys they are able to open the ports ect .
any suggestion on antivirus trying to eliminate all trouble spots in one stop shopping, I have Trend Micro and CA assoc which is just like zonelabs .

i am using a Linksys 4port + G wireless (WR54G or something like that). If you do not have a wireless computer that would use the wireless you can save yourself a bit of $ and forgo the wireless portion and just get a hardwired router.

The other option is you could setup your own Smoothwall router (www.smoothwall.org), but you would need a spare machine, at least 2 NIC's and then a hub/switch to connect all of the machines to.

I like Linksys. I have a WRT54G. Wireless reception is good and it seems to handle VPN very well. With that large of a pipe, you may also be thinking about VOIP.
If this is the case you may want something with a little more horsepower.

that is the wireless router that I have.

As for a smoothwall, they are pretty sweet. You can start with the dual NIC's (Green = inside, Red = outside) and when the time comes you could add a 3rd NIC (Orange = DMZ) and use that for wireless and not have to worry about those machines talking to the Green machines, yet the Green machines can talk to the Orange machines... It is a pretty simple setup, yet is quite powerful.

If you need any help with it ask Bill or myself, we both have done setups with them.

SmoothWall is a great way to go. I use one at home and one at the office for protecting freshly imaged machines that aren't updated yet. I also tested my home unit to see if it slows down my downloads and it makes no difference. I'm currently running it on a P-III 600 with 128MB of RAM. The Linux OS it runs on takes up about 25 MB - yes, that's MB, not GB - so you can run it on any old drive you have lying around. If you've got old equipment hanging around don't spend the money on a new router.

yes I ran a linex server while back still got it might fire it back up.

the smoothwall distro is very simple to use, the support forum is great, and it has ton of support from 3rd parties.
